MASTERCLASS
Blackpool Art Society - February 17th 2007

Title - Illustration Techniques
Watercolour and Gouache

It was again a splendid turn out to my MasterClass with a total of 17 budding watercolourists. Firstly, may I point out that Blackpool Art Society have always greeted me warmly on my visits and it is always a pleasure to visit them for evening demonstrations and appraisal nights.

Today, we looked at a numbers of techniques, from hints on preparing your paper (Hot Press), using opaque gouache for backgrounds (negative space) and subtle colour washes, or as I call them, micro washes. All finished off with fine detail elements.

Considering the style of illustration, it is not often the chosen direction that watercolourist take. It is demanding on acquiring good research and reference material, good preparation and being meticulous in the approach and layering up of washes and fluid masking, not normally done to such an extent if using cold press papers.

Everyone, I'm sure, who attended got so much out of this MasterClass. It was an insight into a methodical way to painting. The Barn Owl subject was perfect in all respects of techniques to be used with each person receiving a detailed photograph to work from (not to mention the prepared outline drawing on HP paper).

And the results? Well what can I say, some excellent smooth washes - good colour management and those that used the gouache, a brave crack at something new!

So it leaves me to say - look forward to seeing you in September for an evenings demonstration - It will probably be Oils for a change, so take care and keep painting!!!

If you are a member of an art society I would like me to visit, please contact me anytime to discuss. Costs do vary depending on the demo theme and travel.

David, looking on as the MasterClass begins

The 'naughty' table at the back! - Yes YOU Mrs Nichols!!!!

The Barn Owl - All masked off with fluid, paper and tape whilst the gouache dries. An effective way of producing jet black backgrounds.

The piece is almost finished.
